[1] It is estimated that around 80% of all chronic diseases could be prevented with lifestyle improvements. [2] Today, the new field of Lifestyle Medicine provides us with new opportunities to prevent and treat these diseases. Historically, Europe has a strong tradition in Lifestyle Medicine.[3] It started in Ancient Greece and still exists in the Mediterranean Diet, a proven way to prevent and treat many lifestyle-related chronic diseases.[4]

As a pharmacist deeply engaged in patient care, understanding the impact of lifestyle on health outcomes is crucial. Lifestyle Medicine focuses on harnessing the power of lifestyle choices to prevent and manage chronic diseases, ultimately enhancing both quality of life and longevity.

Lifestyle Medicine encompasses utilizing evidence-based lifestyle interventions to prevent, treat, and manage chronic diseases. Unlike conventional medicine, which often relies heavily on medications and procedures, Lifestyle Medicine emphasizes the importance of lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, stress management, and sleep quality in maintaining optimal health.[5]

The Eight Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine

Lifestyle Medicine focuses on treating the root causes of diseases rather than just alleviating symptoms. It integrates various aspects of an individual’s life to promote health holistically. The core principles of Lifestyle Medicine align with the following eight pillars[5]:

Thus Lifestyle medicine definitely walks hand in hand with conventional medicine in service of human well-being and longevity.
